We play different styles with the emphasis on Jazz.
The Amsterdam Bigband has 20 musicians and singers and a conductor/arranger. Everyone has a rich artistic history.
We play Swing, Bossa Nova, African Music and Funk and many more types of music. Our latest project: Sailor songs in a Bigband setting, spectacular, weird and exiting.
Simon Lutz has lead a lot of Bigbands in his last 30 years, from ‘The Heart ensemble of Brissago’ to the Jazz Warriors Big Band. ‘Standing in front of the Amsterdam Bigband feels like having a ride in a fast car, there is a lot of power there. He writes most of the arrangements for this group.
Studied at the Conservatory in Hilversum bass trombone, but since then he has also been working as a tenor trombonist. Before, during and after his studies he played with Bobby Burgess Big Band Explosion, SDR-Big Band, WDR-Big Band, NDR-Big Band, Gerald y la Ritmica, New Cool Collective Big Band, Sunday Night Orchestra, Leo's Drugstore, Span Crank, Glenn Weisz Orchestra, various musical productions, and in the most diverse line-ups in both light and classical music.
Trumpeter Bart Noorman twice studied at the Utrecht Conservatory in the 90s he opened the jazz training, in 2015 he obtained his master's degree with endorsement composition / arranging. He once won with his headstrong compositions the Dutch Conservatory Jazz Award, now the Amsterdam Bigband also has some of his pieces in the repertoire. Bart is well-known in the salsa circuit of Amsterdam and does gigs with Pop and Jazz groups regularly.
Bernt is a member of The Soul Travellers an acoustic Hip Hop Quartet. He works as a drummer for the Amsterdam High school for the Arts. He is a drum teacher and leads several music workshops. He plays in many different Jazz and Pop/Rock formations.
Dick plays lead trumpet with the Cotton Club Big Band and does the occasional sub for other Big bands.
Studied at the Hilversum Conservatory and at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. Plays and played at Gerald y La Ritmica, Edy Martinez, Bernie's Lounge, Eddie's Electro Shop, at the "Tiny Little Big Band" and the salsa band "FP La Banda" and Bombardino / euphonium with "Barrionuevo", Colombian folklore fusion from Amsterdam .
Heleen Karsdorp sings currently in Into the light: a gospel project, this is a short musical theater production. She also sings in the formation ImproZo, a vocal group that deals with free improvisation in jazz and world music.
Jan Willem van der Ham has been playing for 35 years now mainly modern classical and free improvised music. He plays bassoon with the David Kweksilber Big Band and the Ives Ensemble. He plays Baritone Sax with a Mulligan/Baker project and Alto Sax with a Saxophone quartet.
Cyrelle Failé is a professional theater performer and theater teacher. In addition to her work, she is a vigorous trumpetist in various orchestras and big bands. Thus she plays in the Brazil-jazz ensemble Sorrindo, with which she plays the music of Hermeto Pascoal; in the Kosmosis big band; at the project orchestra XLJAZZ; and recently also in the Amsterdam big band.
Marc Winder is a Saxophone player, arranger and composer. He was one of the founders and leaders of the ‘Rough Time Orchetra’, ‘The Groove Collectors’ and the ‘Art Beat Saxophone Quartet’. He is also a saxophone teacher at the Muziekpakhuis in Amsterdam.
Thijmen Schoute graduated pianist at the CvA and play in and around the city with small combos like Blackbird, Esther Sabine & TWQ. He also teaches at the Music Factory in Naarden.
Leo Alleman is a passionate trumpet player. When he went to Amsterdam, he discovered the Bigband. Since then he played or plays at The Amsterdam Dance Orchestra, Koki Bow Bigband, Crea Bigband, Biggles Bigband, XLJazz Outdoor Art and the Amstel Bigband.
Alumnus of the Prince Claus Conservatory. Titled 'Master of Music'. In New York City, Crabs studied a semester jazz saxophone. With a unique alto sound and lyrical improvisations, Kees makes music that breathes. Performances including Benny Golson, John Engels, Owen Hart Jr. and Quentin Bryan Angus. Globe trotter Michael occasionally joins the band when he is in Amsterdam. He plays with all the Jazz Greats in New York including Cameron Brown and Barry Harris.
Studied at the Conservatory of Hilversum. He plays accordion and Trombone. His favorite music is modern classical music. He plays from Balkan to Theatre music from classical to Jazz music. He is part of the band of Niki Jacobs and Shura Lipowski.
"Pepijn de Wit (26) is a young, talented jazz singer who wants to put the music of Sinatra, Dino and Sammy back on the map. At the age of 14 he started singing jazz standards. After a music education in London has Pepijn founded his own jazz collective, Cats Collective, and since 2017 he has been singing with the Amsterdam Bigband. "
He is a member of ‘Ritmo Mundo’ with play Afro Latin and Jazz music, and plays with Paolo Passionate and the Pennies from Heaven. Played with Herbie White Orchestra(Jazz), Akki Haak (Jazz) and Groove Train(80’s) He is a teacher at the music school of Amsterdam.
Wolfgang Keller plays Alto and Tenor saxophone. He has his own band which can be a duet or a quartet: Real Time.
Renato Ferreira is a composer, saxophone and double-bass player, originally from São Paulo, Brazil. He was a member of the ensemble of Ricardo Zohyo, a long-term collaborator of Hermeto Pascoal, studying many forms of Brazilian folklore as well as Brazilian instrumental music. He graduated at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, in the Netherlands, where he studied contemporary composition with Martijn Padding, Cornelis De Bondt, Gilius van Bergijk among others. He has been an active improviser in Amsterdam since 2010.
